A Remembrance of our Dad, Nello Palombo
Our dad was born on July 14, 1929 in Ferentino, Frosinone, Italy with brothers, John (deceased), Fernando, Loreto and sister, Adele (deceased). He arrived in America on a transport Liner called, "The Marine Shark" in 1947 with his mother and brother, Loreto. Dad was passenger #6 and was 17 years old at the time. He and family lived at 253 N. Simpson St., Phila. Dad began work at Cohen Clothiers in Philadelphia for 4 years tailoring men's suits and continued his trade at H. Daroff & Sons in Phila., for an additional 30 years as an expert pocket maker. Dad was introduced to our mother by good friend, Angelo Isicrate who also worked at H. Daroff & Sons. Mom & Dad were married on February 6, 1954. They bought a row home in West Philadelphia. Then, along came Anna Maria and Ron! We lived there for 13 years until we moved to Willow Grove, PA.
Once H. Daroff & Sons closed, Dad often did contractual work creating foundations. Eventually, Dad was offered a job as a Supervisor for the Hatboro Horsham School district doing custodial work along with fellow employees, Ray and Gino. Dad, Ray and Gino came to be known as "The Three Amigos" because of the friendship they sustained over the years and for their dedication to the job at hand. Dad worked there for 21 years until his retirement.
Mom and Dad had a condo in Atlantic City, called the Island Club. There, our dad was elected Vice President of the Island Club Association. Dad loved this position and worked tirelessly to keep the Condo building operating in tip top shape. Dad was a jack of all trades and a master of many! He held this position for over 30 years!
Dad's interests were many! He loved to travel, loved to garden, and jar tomatoes. He made a mean Ragu! He made his own wine. Once, he asked Nick to check on the wine he just recently made. Nick went to the wine cellar and never returned. When dad went to look for him, he found Nick in fine form and a little drunk from all the sips of wine he enjoyed sampling! Dad loved to read the English and Italian dictionaries, was meticulous at bookkeeping, loved to wear his hats, and had the most beautiful penmanship!
Dad loved our mom dearly and became her sous-chef in the kitchen. There they worked perfectly together to make fresh pasta, mom's biscotti and all kinds of delicious dishes! Dad loved us all, Nick, his son-in-law, Donna, his daughter-in-law, and especially his grandchildren, Nicholas, Natalie, Anthony, and Joseph and was extremely proud of all our accomplishments!
You were a wonderful husband, dad, granddaddy, uncle, brother and friend!
We love you, Dad, we will miss you and will forever be remembered in our hearts!
Some fond memories:
Built his garage in 1976, with RP, John Ciccozzi, Bicentennial plaque.
Bought Ron at 3 years his first set of Lionel trains; his beautiful rock garden in West Phila.
