Obituary

Joseph P. Scilovati (85), of Erdenheim, Pennsylvania unexpectedly passed away on March 17, 2025.

Joseph (Joe) was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, great uncle and a loyal friend to many.  He was born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia on January 18, 1940, to the late Dominic and Lena (nee Zappone) Scilovati and is survived by his two sisters Pam (Jerry) Ciaffone and Rosemarie Beal.  Joe is also survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Catherine (Cass), his two children, Jeannine Solomon and Peter (Jane) Scilovati, his six grandchildren, Joseph (Sarah), Alyssa (Sean), Alec, Natalie, Luke, and Nick, and his six great grandchildren, Harper, Stella, Lena, Max, Carmen and Jemma, all of whom adored their playful, loving and vivacious "Poppy".

During the 1970's, Joe settled his family in Hatboro, Pennsylvania and began a career as a restaurant owner. After spending several years as a restauranteur, he permanently transitioned his profession to the construction industry.  Under the mentorship of his dear friend, Richard Wigand, Joe converged his skills and business acumen to establish JPS Construction Company, which remains a family-run business that continues to thrive today.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joe had many passions that brought him joy away from work; golfing as a former member of Plymouth Country Club and Cedarbrook Country Club, fishing and boating along the Jersey shore, playing poker and gin, and following his beloved Philadelphia sports teams. Joe was also an avid fan of professional boxing, and even boxed competitively as a teenager in the Philadelphia area.

Joe had owned a home in Brigantine, New Jersey for decades, but his heart was set on something more—a house by the water. Through his hard work and determination, his dream finally came true. He purchased a beautiful bayfront home, perfect for bringing his extended family together for relaxing summer days and lively nights. Joe could always be heard saying, "Come down the shore, there's plenty of room!", even when there wasn't!

Joe's generosity was limitless—a gift to all who knew him. He was the very definition of selflessness, always ready to lend a hand. Even in his mid-80s—often balancing mid-ladder—he would stop whatever he was doing to help others. And if he couldn't assist himself, he would make sure to find someone who could. His connections and kindness knew no bounds.

Joe was happiest at the end of a hot July day in Brigantine, the sun's about to set, the grill is fired up, and the hot dogs and hamburgers are sizzling; He's drinking a Stella out of a frosted beer glass, the kids have just returned from their early evening boat ride and the adults are ravenous, showered and sand-free.  And, as always, a few unexpected friends have dropped by—because at Joe's table, there was always room for more. He yells, "Let's go, dinner's ready!" …and we all gather.  That is Joe's heaven.
