Obituary

Jennifer Haviland Barker, 57, of Flourtown, PA, died after a brief, courageous battle with lung cancer, on Sunday February 10 at Keystone House in Glenside PA. Born in Long Valley, NJ, Ms. Barker was the owner of Springfield Abstract, a real estate title company. She had a long career in real estate, both as an agent, and then as a title company employee and ultimately the owner of her own firm. Ms. Barker attended the former Parkway School in Philadelphia. Although she never attended an institution of higher learning, she was a self-taught artist in many ways. She had a tremendous flair for decorative arts, and she started to paint enthusiastically in oils in 2007. Her painting adventures led her to take workshops in many locales, including: Tilghman Island, MD; Port Clyde, ME:; Santa Fe, NM; Elbow Cay in the Bahamas; Playa Del Carmen, Mexico; and Costa Rica. In addition to producing fine work on these trips, she was the life of the group she travelled with, adding a spirit of fun and energy to the workshop. The daughter of the late Barbara P. Barker and the late Barnes H. Barker, she was the youngest of three children. Ms. Barker's early family life was disrupted by the death of her mother when she was two years old. She was fostered by the Ribble family of Collegeville, PA , including mother Judith Ribble, and her children Darrah, Glenn and Anna, who all remained close to Ms. Barker throughout her life. Her stepmother, Flora Turner, who later married her father, was also an important family figure to Ms. Barker. She is survived by her brothers, David and Michael, and her niece Rachel and nephew Daniel, the children of David Barker. Ms. Barker is also survived by a large network of close friends who treasured their relationships with her, notably Michael Candido and his family of Wyndmor and Flourtown, PA, and Fran Atkinson and her family of West Chester, PA. A memorial service for Ms. Barker will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 3PM at the Plymouth Friends Meeting House, 2150 Butler Pike, Plymouth Meeting PA 19462. Donations for a bench dedicated to her memory, which will be placed along the banks of the Wissahickon Creek where she liked to walk, may be made to the "Jennifer Barker Bench Fund," c/o Daniel Barker, 3330 Wiehle Street, Philadelphia, PA 19129.
